Original Airdate - May 4th, 1993
After freeing Talia from her father's clutches and escaping from an
avalanche, Batman and Robin follow the only clue they have - the word
'Orpheus'. After discovering that 'Orpheus' is Ra's private satellite
that will orbit over the Sahara, the duo travel to the Demon's desert
stronghold. There, Batman learns that the satellite is actually a weapon
which will explosively destroy all the Lazarus Pits
simultaneously, throughout the world, destroying all the life that
exists.

Quotes
RA'S: You see, if you aren't with me, Detective, then you are
against me.
--
BATMAN: You okay?
ROBIN: Sure. I wish I wore the thermal tights but other than that. . .
--
UBU: His mask, master?
RA'S: No, leave it. It is a mark of honor.
--
RA'S: At the moment when sun and moon are in proper alignment to cause
the greatest upheaval in Earth's geomagnetic field, I shall send a
signal to that satellite beginning a countdown. Five minutes thereafter,
one bomb will be lowered deep into the heart of each pit. The satellite
will in turn relay a microwave signal that will detonate all the bombs
simultaneously. The multiple explosions will result in a global chain
reaction. All the Lazarus pits throughout the world will overflow. The
globe will be saturated with their chemical solution and when the
resultant cataclysm has abated, there will come a blessed peace, and
this poor, defiled planet shall find itself restored to its former
pristine glory.
BATMAN: But that will cost countless lives!
RA'S: Actually, Detective, we have counted. Two-billion,
fifty-six-million, nine-hundred and eighty-six thousand. A most
impressive plan, wouldn't you agree?
BATMAN: Yes. I can see it clearly now for the first time. You are
completely out of your mind.
--
UBU: Infidel!
BATMAN: If you only knew how sick I am of you calling me that!
--
RA'S: The victory is yours. Perhaps it is time I am finally one with the
planet I so love.
--
TALIA: What's to become of me then? Am I to become your prisoner?
BATMAN GRABS TALIA AND KISSES HER AS THE SUN RISES IN THE DISTANCE.
Review: This was one of the
greatest moments of Batman the Animated Series; the confrontation
between Batman and Ra's Al Ghul. It is just so powerful; the animation,
the backgrounds, the music, the dialogue. . . All of it is great!
One of the greatest speeches of the whole series was Ra's villainous
plot speech to Batman towards the end, which is quite long, but very
powerful. This whole episode, and the one prior to it, was a sort of a
James Bond mission of Batman's, especially the ending with the satellite
and the giant explosions rocking the countdown scene.
The music was also very well done, paying tribute to Lawrence of Arabia
at one point. Another great piece was the triumphant swashbuckling music
when Batman and Ra's were sword fighting. The whole episode was simply
excellent to watch.
