Review
An episode I'll admit I wasn't looking forward to the in the
slightest due to the fact I think the Legion Of Superheroes aren't much
all that much cooler than The Legion Of Losers and I can't stand
Supergirl. I'm in the camp that thinks Superman is the last son of
Krypton, bringing in his cousin, his clone and even his dog defies the
point of him being the last of his species.
Regardless, the episode didn't completely suck as I anticipated it
would. I had my hopes raised slightly by the fact Batman/Superman
veteran Paul Dini was scripting but this lacks the usual spark that
makes Dini's efforts so memorable. Had I not seen his Static Shock
efforts (and believe me, I wish I hadn't) I'd have accounted this
amongst his worst work.
The whole episode was a little off, to me, more than likely due to the
romance between Supergirl and Legion boy Brainiac 5 being so forced and
cliched it was too difficult to take seriously. I'll admit I do like a
little romance in my cartoons as they're such good drama but when it's
done as badly as this, I wish the big guys would get back to beating the
crap out of each other with their cool powers.
Between Supergirl and Brainiac here, there's no depth to the
relationship, making her decision to stay a little in the future feel a
little random. To be blunt, I'm glad she's gone as the show has clearly struggled with what to do with her post-"Cadmus." I did appreciate Dini's attempts to connect her to
Superman more after they've pretty much ignored each other since the end
of "Legacy" but all in all, Supergirl wasn't gotten the screen time needed to make her stand out.
Green Arrow saved the episode here. He, like Batman, seems to be able to
make the best of whatever mediocre situation (i.e, episode) he's in and
keep you watching.
All in all, not too much going on here. If you're a fan of The Legion,
then perhaps you'll enjoy knowing who the characters Supergirl was
beating the crap out of actually are. Everyone else, Supergirl fans
aside, will probably want to debate how much fun that Nightwing cameo in
the previous episode was... |
